Libertyville man charged with hit and run after barricading himself in home

A Libertyville man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after he barricaded himself inside his home to avoid capture last week, Libertyville police officials said.

Michael R. Roeser, 49, of the 1200 block of E. Park Avenue, was formally charged Wednesday with leaving the scene of a property damage accident and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident by police and the Lake County State's Attorney's Office, Lt. Scott Fabbri said.

Roeser is due in court Nov. 11 and is free on $1,500 bond. Fabbri said.

Roeser was involved in an accident shortly after 4 p.m. Sept. 30 near Route 176 and Ashbury Lane, police said. Rather than staying at the crash site, he took off running and locked himself in his home, police said.

Police heard Roeser might be armed, so special units were called in to talk him out of the house, authorities said.

No one was injured at the home or in the traffic accident, but East Park Avenue was closed for two hours during the incident.

Fabbri said Roeser refused to give a reason for his actions following the crash, or speak with detectives.

Fabbri said Roeser was not charged in connection with barricading himself in his home after the crash because he did nothing wrong in that regard. Roeser left the scene of the crash and went home, Fabbri said, then refused to come out and talk with police. The refusal prompted police concern for Roeser's safety, which led to police surrounding the home.
