Dog in Indiana finds what may be human remains

HAMMOND, Ind. — A dog has found apparent human remains at the site of a former store in Hammond.

Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda told the Post-Tribune that the owners of a nearby business let their dog out Wednesday afternoon and the Rottweiler named Brutus came back with a possible finger bone with a ring on it. They urged the dog to show them where he had found the bone, and he led them to a demolition site. Hoyda said Brutus started digging in the same spot and found a possible human skull.

Hoyda said the bones were found under where the demolished building’s foundation would have stood.

Police contacted a forensic anthropologist for assistance.
