South Elgin Lions name Rookie of the Year

Submitted by South Elgin Lions Club

The South Elgin Lions Club presented its Rookie of the Year award to Lion Bruce Miller of South Elgin on Sept. 7. This award was created several years ago as a way to recognize the newest members who tend hit the pavement running and contribute time and energy to the various projects of the club.

Lion Bruce joined the club in October 2010, and while a longtime bingo player on Saturday nights at the Lions Club, he felt he was ready to get involved a service organization. He chose the Lions Club for their work in the community and service to the hearing and visually impaired. Now instead of playing bingo, most Saturday nights you will find him in the caller's booth.

The South Elgin Lions Club promotes diabetes awareness and provides hearing tests and hearing aids to those in financial need.

With the money raised throughout the year, this club has been able to make donations to South Elgin families in need, Holiday Food Baskets, Operation Jingle Bells, South Elgin Food Pantry, Salvation Army, Little Angels Nursing Home for severely disabled children, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 14 Shop With a Cop, South Elgin youth sports teams, Special Olympics, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and many others.

If you are interested in becoming a member, contact any South Elgin Lion or call (847) 888-9575 for more information.
