2011 “Senior of the Year” Award Winners Named at Lombard Senior Fair
Fruehe and Meyer were chosen from the nominees that were submitted to the Village of Lombard Community Relations Committee. Nominees for the award also included Patricia Poskocil, Marie Teixeira, Don Barg and LeRoy Roath.
The “Senior of the Year” award is given to one male and one female senior resident of Lombard. The award, in its sixth year, aims to celebrate the accomplishments of seniors in the community.
Fruehe was nominated for the many hours of volunteer time that she has given to Sacred Heart School Library and the Lombard Historical Society. Her research of Lombard history has provided a wealth of information to generations of Lombardians. She has been involved in the restoration of the Sheldon Peck Homestead and her research is still referenced in the move to get the Peck Home recognized on the “National Register of Historic Places.” She volunteered as a docent for the Peck Home for ten years and has authored a number of articles and books, among many other accomplishments.
Meyer was nominated for his activity within Lombard, specifically for his volunteer work with the Maple Street Chapel preservation. Having been described as an “extraordinary volunteer,” Meyer also volunteers with the Tri-Town YMCA, Bensenville Home Society/Lifelink, North Central College and previously served as a member of the Lombard Village Board of Trustees.
The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding seniors who have “contributed to their community,” stated William “Bill” Mueller, Lombard Village President. “All of these seniors are to be commended for their dedication to making Lombard a better community,” he added.
The “Senior of the Year” award winners will also be honored by riding in the
2012 Lilac Parade.
