Maine West falls

As a catcher on the baseball diamond, Glenbrook North senior Jason Scholl knows a thing or two about helping to close out a game.

However, typically he's on the receiving end of a closer's best pitch.

Thursday night at William Lutz Stadium in Northbrook, Scholl served up strikes two and three to punch out visiting Maine West to the tune of 21-14 in a Central Suburban North football game.

Scholl carried the ball three consecutive plays, his only carries of the game, to cover the final 17 yards of the 70-yard scoring drive that put the Spartans (3-4, 2-1) ahead for good.

When the Warriors (0-7, 0-3) took over deep in their own territory and down by seven with 23 seconds on the clock, Scholl intercepted Maine West quarterback Jake Korbecki's pass attempt on first down to ice the game.

"Tonight the starting pitcher had to be Curt Petty and in a lot of ways I was that closer at running back," said Scholl. "When I got the pull, I put my head down and ran forward as fast as I could and luckily got in the end zone."

Maine West tied the game up at 14-14 with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter on a Korbecki 4-yard touchdown strike. The score finished an epic 16-play drive that ate up 9:56 and 76 yards at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter.

Korbecki completed 2 of 7 pass attempts for 13 yards and ran for 61 yards and a TD.

"I'm proud of my boys," said Maine West coach Chris Hare. "We hit better than we've hit before and we ran the ball better than we ran before."

After the Warriors tied the game, the Spartans went to their spread offense and Petty, the Spartans' senior quarterback, took charge from there.
