Thieves steal $5,600 worth of onions in Darien

Thieves in Darien have stolen more than $5,600 worth of onions.

Darien police say the suspects took the onions from a flatbed trailer parked in a truck yard near I-55. It happened sometime after a driver left them there Friday evening. The theft was reported Tuesday night. The 2 1/2 pallets of onions were headed to an Indianapolis produce store.

The onions were packed in bags. They were stacked in the back of an open-air trailer. Police say there were no security cameras operating in the area.

Darien police officer Nick Skweres says he “can’t recall the last time Darien had an onion theft.” Police say they’re investigating.
