South Elgin shuts out Marian Central

The South Elgin boys soccer team’s offense took the field by storm.

The South Elgin Storm (9-4-5) shut out the Marian Central Hurricanes (5-8-4 by a score of 5-0 at South Elgin High School on Wednesday evening. The Storm created plenty of scoring chances throughout the game, scoring 2 goals in the first half and 3 goals in the second. Head coach John Uveges was pleased that his team executed its game plan, especially in the second half.

“We’re trying to come from the corners, and we did that today,” said Uvegas. “We stuck to the game plan in the second half, and within the first seven minutes we had four strikes on the net.”

Defenseman Spencer Scott, who sat out of practice due to a swollen foot, put the Storm on the board in the first half with his first of 2 goals. Then, with about three minutes left in the half, Tyler Piszczek extended the lead to 2-0 off a rebound of another shot by Scott.

“A lot of people don’t know this, but out of all the people on this field, he has the least amount of soccer experience by far,” said Uvegas of Scott. “That really speaks for his athleticism.”

Scott would lead off the second half with a goal as well, on a play from a corner kick. With about 18 minutes left in the half, Mike Kozielek would give the Storm a 4-0 lead after moving the ball up the field, and Bryan Irwin would seal the 5-0 victory with a goal about a minute later.

Marian Central head coach Kristian Rockall was happy with the way his team performed in the first half-hour of the game, and hopes the Hurricanes can move on from the loss and focus on the positive play they had early.

“We gave it our all for 30 minutes against a very solid team,” said Rockall . “Our game plan was to score in that first 30 minutes; and when the first goal went their way instead of ours, our heads dropped. But I was very pleased with the first 30 minutes, and if we can build on that and play our games like that for all 80 minutes, I think we’ll come around at the end of the season and put a good little playoff run together.”
