Village promotes free residential leaf pickup

LOMBARD, Illinois--The Village of Lombard's free leaf pick-up for residents will be held October 24-December 2, 2011.

The free leaf pick-up is for Kraft brown paper bags ONLY (unlimited number of bags) and these bags must contain only leaves. Residents will be required to place yard waste stickers on any cans that are filled with leaves. Bags of leaves may be put at the curb on the regular garbage collection day.

Leaves may not be blown or raked into the streets. According to the Village's Public Works Department, the leaves have a tendency to cover and block the storm drains in the street, which in turn cause flooding problems when it rains. It is against Village Code to place leaves in a public alley, roadway, street, driveway or sidewalk.

The Village's yard waste program will end for the season on December 16. Cans and bags filled with yard waste (grass clippings, small twigs or branches and plant materials) must have stickers on them. Properly bundled brush does not require a sticker. Brush is defined as limbs or branches from trees, shrubs or bushes. Bundles of brush must be securely tied, not exceeding six feet in length or 18 inches in diameter, and cannot exceed 50 pounds each. No individual branch or limb can exceed six inches in diameter.

Yard waste and refuse stickers are available for purchase at Village Hall and the following locations:

• Village Hall

• Jewel Food Store (Roosevelt Road, Lombard and St. Charles Road, Villa Park)

• Schroeder's Ace Hardware (Eastgate)

• Ultra Foods (Roosevelt Road)

• West Suburban Bank, 711 S. Westmore

• Mr. Z's Supermarket (Main Street)

The cost of the yard waste stickers is $1.80 each.
