N. Ind. officials: Tree was older than 500 years
MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — Officials in northwestern Indiana say a tree believed to be between 500 and 800 years old has died and must be removed.
Merrillville officials tell The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/qZgoal ) that the bur oak is believed to be the oldest in Lake County and is likely among the oldest in the state. It was featured in National Geographic in 1955.
Merrillville Stormwater Department Executive Director Matt Lake says officials don’t know what caused the tree to die. He says the town may be able to determine the cause after it is cut down.
Lake plans to obtain a cross section or core sample from the tree to determine its exact age.
