Assistive Technology Resource Fair Oct. 8

Fair Focuses on Low-Tech and High-Tech Devices Used by Persons with Disabilities

The City of Naperville and the Advisory Commission on Disabilities are hosting a free Assistive Technology Resource Fair from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 8 at the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St.

Assistive technology is utilized by individuals with disabilities in order to perform functions that may otherwise be difficult or impossible. Dozens of vendors will demonstrate various types of technology and devices available, including demonstrations of video telephones for those with hearing or speech impairments, amplified telephones that assist those with hearing loss, computer software for those with vision or cognitive impairments and much more.

“The technology fair will be a fun and educational experience for persons with disabilities and their families to learn about the variety of technologies that can be used throughout their lives,” Advisory Commission on Disabilities Chairman Peter Berg said. “I encourage everyone to attend.”

An educational component will be provided through four presentations in Council Chambers. The discussions will focus on the use of technology in educational settings, employment and in the home. Apple will also demonstrate the accessibility features of the iPad and iPod.

Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital will have its driver rehabilitation van present to exhibit various types of adaptive equipment available for those who need accommodations in order to operate a vehicle. Mobility Works will also have on display a wheelchair accessible motorcycle. Finally, the Advisory Commission on Disabilities will recognize an outstanding individual and a local business for their work improving the lives of people with disabilities.
