Law requiring drain upgrades could close pools

About 400 public pools across Illinois might have to close this weekend because they don’t have safety upgrades on their drains.

State officials say the pools are facing a Saturday deadline that won’t be extended. By then, the pools must have new drains or covers designed to keep swimmers from getting trapped by powerful suction.

Melaney Arnold of the Illinois Department of Public Health says about 10 percent of the state’s 4,000 public pools aren’t in compliance with the new law.

The Chicago Tribune (http://trib.in/obQeGu ) reports that those pools could remain closed for two months or more while the state approves their plans to comply with the law.
