Chicago man gets life for Lansing motel murder

A Chicago man already serving a 105-year prison sentence for a Minooka carjacking also has received a life sentence for killing a man during a Lansing motel robbery.

Cook County prosecutors say 28-year-old Lawrence Coffee pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and armed robbery in the April death of 55-year-old Regan Lytle of Kentucky. Earlier this month Coffee was sentenced in Grundy County to 105 years for a Minooka carjacking.

Prosecutors say Coffee shot Lytle because Lytle didn’t move quickly enough during the robbery. Lytle died a month later.

Officials say after he shot Lytle, Coffee went on a monthlong crime spree. They say Lytle shot a 14-year-old boy in Gary, Ind., attacked an elderly man in Chicago and shot a woman at a gas station during the Minooka carjacking.
