Kill the weeds, and road will last longer

As the bridge over Route 53 on Dundee reaches completion, I am reminded how nice a newly completed repaired road can look and feel when driving.

My concern is that on either side of the repair you can see pretty large clumps of weeds and grass growing in the cracks of the existing concrete curbs, center island and street. These weeds have roots and roots start the process of allowing moisture in and cracking out those concrete sections and in a few years they will deteriorate to the point they will need repair.

I believe these weeds and grass should be kept under control throughout the village by spraying them with a weed killer on a periodic basis — maybe twice per growing season. This would minimize this type of deterioration and the taxpayers’ money used to perform those concrete repairs.
