DuPage Forest Preserve publications honored

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County recently was recognized with several national awards for outstanding publications.

The Conservationist, the district’s quarterly magazine, received the highest award in the 2011 National Association of County Information Officers Awards of Excellence Competition.

Among 284 entries in nine categories, The Conservationist was named a Best of Class in the publications category and the single overall Best of Show. The district earned two other awards in this competition. “What’s Your Outdoor Persona?,” an article from the fall 2010 issue of The Conservationist written by public affairs specialist Bonnie Olszewski, received an Excellence Award in the feature-writing category. The district’s annual report for fiscal year 2008-09 received a Superior Award among other annual reports.

The article “Working the Night Shift” by naturalist Jack MacRae was recognized with an Award of Excellence in the feature-writing category by the 23rd annual APEX Awards for Publication Excellence sponsored by Communications Concepts Inc. The article appeared in the fall 2010 issue of The Conservationist.

More than 3,300 entries were submitted to this year’s competition and were judged on the ability to achieve overall communications excellence.

The Conservationist features a calendar of events as well as stories on natural and cultural histories, natural-areas management, native plant and animal communities and environmental education. All of the publication’s stories are written by district staff.

The print edition reaches more than 35,000 subscribers, and the publication has received numerous awards since its inception in 1965. An electronic version is available for free download from the forest preserve’s website, dupageforest.org. Print subscriptions are free to DuPage County residents, $5 for others.
