Trial date set in Lincolnshire day care death case

A trial is set for Oct. 31 for Melissa Calusinski, charged in a toddler’s 2009 death at a Lincolnshire day care center.

Lake County Judge Daniel Shanes held a pretrial hearing Tuesday in the case of Melissa Calusinski. Calusinski is accused of throwing a 16-month-old boy to the ground in January 2009 at a suburban Chicago day care center. She has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys have started discussing jury selection. Calusinski is held at the Lake County jail.

Prosecutors say Benjamin Kingan was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. They say Calusinski was frustrated because the boy was being noisy.

The toddler died of a skull fracture and internal bleeding by a blow to head.
