Mike Jackson’s outdoors notes: Fishing update

I would be doing a disservice to those dedicated anglers on Chicago’s lakefront if I didn’t tout the outstanding catches of trout and salmon going on right now. In fact, the Chinook and brown trout catches continue to amaze those doing the cranking on the reels. If you do the deed, you will probably see some fresh steelhead as well.

Fox Chain: Charlie Gordon of Mount Prospect reported that he “tore ’em up” on Pistakee Lake recently. He was referring to walleyes in the 3-pound to 6-pound class. Charlie took all his fish while trolling in fairly shallow water. The muskie action on Lake Catherine has turned on and some fish are fairly large. The bluegill activity on Channel Lake is great with decent fish being taken on Mini-Mites tipped with spikes.

Fox River: If you can wade, get out on this body of water in the South Elgin area for smallmouth bass. Large minnows, jigs and plastic as well as small spinner baits good choices.

Bangs Lake: Very good largemouth action near the square channel entrance right in the weed pockets. Fish in the 2- to 4-pound range being taken on Little Action Mac worms as well as Yum plastics.
