Inmate who escaped in Indy recaptured in Iowa

INDIANAPOLIS — Authorities say a Marion County Jail inmate who escaped from a work detail has been captured in Iowa.

Indianapolis authorities say 21-year-old Cody Thurman was arrested early Sunday in Andrew, Iowa, after a bar owner became suspicious and alerted police. Thurman was being held by authorities in Belleview, Iowa, awaiting extradition to Indiana.

Police say Thurman was serving on a kitchen maintenance detail in the basement of the City-County Building in downtown Indianapolis late Friday night when he escaped his handcuffs and chain line and exited through the building's underground garage.

Authorities say Thurman will be charged with felony escape and could face additional charges related to the theft of a motor vehicle that crashed Saturday morning on the city's west side.
