Glendale Heights police asked for help in locating Punok Blaskey after she hadn't been seen since leaving her home in the area of Gregory Avenue and Glen Ellyn Road at 5:30 a.m. Police did not release details of her whereabouts or where she was located

A Naperville man has been charged with battery for the second time in two years following a confrontation he had with police Saturday.

Dist. 128 to shut pool after missing word about 2007 drain law

Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 officials say they'll close the swimming pools at the two campuses because federally mandated repairs won't be made by an Oct. 1 deadline. District 128 officials said they didn't know about a 2007 law requiring drains to be upgraded. “A ball was dropped by one of our folks,” Superintendent Prentiss Lea said. Full story.

Everything must go at shuttered Arlington Heights hotel

The Sheraton Northwest Hotel on Euclid Avenue down the street from Arlington Park in Arlington Heights started its “everything must go” liquidation sale yesterday, putting everything from bar stools to phones to coffee pots to filing cabinets on the block. With more than 20,000 items for sale there is a lot of loot remaining for bargain hunters. “The bottom line is, we want all this stuff out the door, so we will listen to offers,” said Bill Melvin, CEO of Liquid Asset Partners. Bensenville fire kills family dog, under investigation

Bensenville fire investigators continue to look into the cause of an afternoon blaze that left a family's home uninhabitable and killed their dog. The fire broke out in the rear of the home at around 2:25 p.m. near the Bensenville village hall and caused about $250,000 in damages. Full story.

Election board collects only $1.2 million out of $21.5 million in fines

Since the state's board of elections began fining political campaigns for rules infractions in 1999, they've levied almost $21.5 million. But the state agency has only collected about $1.2 million of that amount -- 5.8%. “One of the benefits of the board of elections is keeping people honest,” Hoffman Estates state Rep. Fred Crespo said. “The question is how much is that going to cost us.” Full story.

Hanover Park man learns all about hand fishing

Most fishermen angling for catfish debate which type of fresh bait best entices the creatures. But for Skipper Bivins, the only lures necessary are some of his own body parts. Fidel Castro's daughter speaks at Elgin Community College

The estranged daughter of Cuban leader Fidel Castro recounted stories of her life in Cuba and of her revolutionary father's visits when she was a child from the television set to her living room while speaking at Elgin Community College. The speech, which was part of the college's Latino Heritage Month, presented those in the audience with an intimate look into Castro's personal life. Glendale Heights woman, 60, missing

Glendale Heights police are asking for the public's help in locating a 60-year-old woman who left her home on foot yesterday morning and has not been seen since. Punok Blaskey left her home in the area of Gregory Avenue and Glen Ellyn Road at 5:30 a.m. and has several health issues that cause her to tire easily when walking. Full story.

Traffic

Expressways are showing general heavy congestion throughout the system this morning. Four accidents on the Tri-State and Jane Addams tollways closer to the city have been cleared up, but its expected to remain heavy through the mid-morning hours. In Itasca, the Illinois Department of Transportation have shut down Illinois 53 at the Metra railroad crossing just north of Irving Park Road for about 10 days due to a crossing upgrade. Detours are marked throughout the route, officials said.

Aramis Ramirez thinks home game was his last as a Cub

Although Aramis Ramirez put together a year that positively surprised many of his critics and has voiced that he would like to remain a Cub in 2012, his comments after last night's loss to the Brewers were anything but optimistic. When asked if he's played his last game at Wrigley as a Cub, he said, “Probably, there's a good chance.” Full story.

White Sox split doubleheader vs. Indians

With the White Sox trailing the Cleveland Indians in a stretch run for 2nd place in the AL Central, the teams split yesterday's day-night doubleheader. The Sox remain 1½ games behind the Indians for the 2nd place spot. Alexei Ramirez's seventh-inning single broke the game's final tie and led Chicago to a 5-4 win over the Indians on Tuesday night to salvage the split. Full story.

Metta World Peace voted off ‘Dancing with the Stars'

And with the distinction of being the worst and first dancer kicked off this year's season of “Dancing with the Stars,” the voters chose the athlete formerly known as Ron Artest. The Los Angeles Lakers forward, who now officials goes by Metta World Peace, received the lowest score from the judges on Monday's premiere and was sent packing last night.
