Knee injury ends Wood’s season

Kerry Wood has dealt with more than his fair share of injuries during his career, so what’s one more?

The Cubs and Wood said Monday that he would miss the remaining nine games of the season with a meniscus tear in his left knee.

Wood will undergo arthroscopic surgery shortly after the season ends. Wood said he suffered the injury about two hours after Saturday’s game against Houston, a game in which he worked one-third of an inning.

“It’s one of those things,” he said. “I squatted down and stood up and, ‘Pop.’ Sharp pain and burning. I’m glad it happened now instead of getting through the season and going into spring and having something happen in spring.”

Speaking of spring, Wood said he hopes to spend another one with the Cubs. He signed a one-year contract at a bargain price of $1.5 million with former general manager Jim Hendry last winter.

Wood said he probably would retire rather than pitch for another team. The Cubs currently are searching for a new GM.

“We’ll see where we’re at,” Wood said. “I’m not going to play anywhere else. This is where I want to be. If they need me back, I’ll be back. I’m sure those conversations will happen in the next couple of months.”

The Cubs drafted Wood in the first round in 1995. He made his major-league debut in 1998. He left as a free agent after the 2008 season, spending most of 2009 and 2010 with Cleveland before being traded to the Yankees on July 31, 2010.

Wood had reconstructive elbow surgery in 1999 and later battled shoulder problems.

He has made his home in Chicago. A bowling tournament Sunday night for his newly formed charitable foundation raised about $400,000, he said.

“I spent half my life here, in this organization,” he said. “This organization is family to me. I’ll get a chance to make a new relationship with the Ricketts family (Cubs owners).

“I plan on being around. I’m raising my kids here. My family is going to be here. As much as they want me around, I’d like to be part of the organization.”

More call-ups:The Cubs called up catcher Steve Clevenger and right-handed reliever Rafael Dolis from Class AA Tennessee, a club that lost to Mobile on Sunday in the Southern League championship series.Both players are looking to make their major-league debuts.Clevenger spent part of this season at Class AAA Iowa. In both stops, he combined for a hitting line of .319/.383/.475 with 8 homers and 54 RBI. Dolis went 8-5 with 17 saves and a 3.22 ERA in 51 appearances (4 starts) with Tennessee.#147;I didn#146;t find out until after the game last night,#148; Clevenger said. #147;I had a good year offensively, and I#146;m still learning how to catch. That was my main focus, was to concentrate on catching, not really on hitting. Offensively, I did well.#148;
