New panel to advise on science of Ill. rivers

SPRINGFIELD— A panel of scientists and experts is going to offer advice on how to improve the health of Illinois rivers.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon says the Science Advisory Council will recommend techniques to fight flood damage, protect river ecosystems and keep water safe.

Simon appointed five people Wednesday. They include an official at the Illinois State Water Survey, a Southern Illinois University professor and an executive at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

In addition, two more members of the council will be chosen by the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center. The research center is based at Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey.

Illinois has had an advisory council on rivers in the past, but it was discontinued. Members of the new council won’t be paid.
