Chicago man accused of threatening to bomb SIU

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A Chicago man is accused of threatening to bomb Southern Illinois University's flagship Carbondale campus and kill 4,000 students and staff.

WSIU Radio reports that a federal grand jury has indicted 23-year-old Maurice Wiggins on a felony charge of making a bomb threat.

Authorities allege that Wiggins made the threat via the Internet on Aug. 29, sending a message from his cell phone to the 20,000-student university's crime-watch website.

Wiggins allegedly said he planned to bomb three dormitories and a student center.

Wiggins couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday. Online court records don't indicate if he has an attorney, and Wiggins doesn't have a listed home telephone number.

The charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
