Mundelein High School senior Robert Schwarzhaupt has earned an honorable mention award in the 2010-11 Civil War Trust Essay Contest sponsored by HISTORY.

Schwarzhaupt was a student in Tom Kuhn's Civil War course during the last term of the school year.

As part of the award, Schwarzhaupt will receive a membership to the Civil War Trust.

“Your essay took a thoughtful, creative and unique approach to this year's theme of ‘Preserving 150 Years of History: Secession and the War's Beginnings',” said Libby O'Connell, chief historian, senior vice president of Corporate Outreach at A&E Television Networks.

“We were very impressed with your writing, point of view on preservation and understanding of the American Civil War.”

The Civil War Trust is America's largest nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of the nation's endangered Civil War battlefields. The trust also promotes educational programs and heritage tourism initiatives to inform the public of the war's history and the fundamental conflicts that sparked it.
