PGA season of unexpected should hold true again with BMW Championship

In a season where you never knew who was going to win week-to-week, it’s appropriate that this week’s BMW Championship at Cog Hill, the third of four events in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, is completely up for grabs.

Will it be one of the red-hot young players such as 27-year-old Webb Simpson, who has won twice in the last three weeks, including his sudden-death playoff victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship?

Or will defending champ Dustin Johnson, who just won at the rain-shortened The Barclay’s, provide a successful encore?

Maybe it will be a cagey veteran like Steve Stricker or Ernie Els. Who knows?

“The BMW Championship is very excited to welcome both golf’s established stars as well as members of its new generation,” said Vince Pellegrino, vice president of tournaments for the Western Golf Association, which has conducted the event since 1899. “We’re living in an exciting new era in golf and we know our fans are eager to experience a competition among players who are at the top of their games.”

And then there’s the course itself, which last year, following a searing summer, felt even more heat from the pros once the tournament started. Will it be in better shape this time around?

Will the tournament even return to Cog Hill in the future?

Those are just some of the questions surrounding this year’s event. The answers to some, if not all, will begin to unfold over the next few days.
