Health officials offer tick safety precautions

Summer may be ending, but health officials say it’s still an active time for ticks.

Ticks can transmit illnesses such as Lyme disease. In DuPage County alone, there were 14 reported cases of Lyme disease in the first six months of this year. That’s compared with 19 cases during all of last year.

Health officials say people should be on alert for rashes or any unexplained illnesses following a tick bite.

Among the precautions people can take to avoid getting bitten is to check for ticks on their body often when outside. Also bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors to wash off any ticks.
