Civil War reenactment set for Grant historic site

GALENA, — A reenactment of a Civil War gathering of volunteer soldiers will take place later this month in northwestern Illinois.

Re-enactors of the Old Northwest Volunteers plan to recreate the 1861 mustering of the 45th Volunteer Illinois Infantry. The event is set for Sept. 24-25 in the park across the street from the Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historic Site in Galena.

The re-enactors will receive orders, check weapons, train and participate in camp life. Some will portray civilians who followed soldiers from camp to camp.

The 45th Volunteer Illinois Infantry fought under Grant in some of the major battles of the Civil War, including the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Vicksburg.

Visitors are welcome to the reenactment. The event is free.
