Wind delays hoisting of Indianapolis sculpture
INDIANAPOLIS — Winds have been too gusty for a crane to start lifting a 38-foot-tall bronze sculpture back to its place atop the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis.
Crews are on hand Tuesday, ready to hoist the 118-year-old Victory sculpture more than 200 feet. That would be the last step in its journey nearly five months after it was taken down for a $1.5 million restoration project.
Indiana War Memorials Commission director Stewart Goodwin tells WTHR-TV that wind gusts have been about 30 mph, but have to be less than 20 mph for the crane work to begin.
Goodwin says the wind gusts are an important safety factor because the 10-ton sculpture will have about four inches of clearance inside scaffolding at the monument's top.
