Cubs reward Oneri Fleita with contract extension

One down, one to go?

Still to be determined.

After profusely praising the work of Oneri Fleita and Tim Wilken recently, Cubs owner Tom Ricketts finally put his money where his mouth is this week by awarding a four-year extension to Fleita, the team's vice president of player personnel.

Fleita, 44, has been with the Cubs since 1995. He has served as vice president of player development since 2008.

Cub killer:Derrek Lee loves playing the Cubs, or at least his numbers against them would suggest that.Lee returned from the disabled list (wrist) Saturday, went 3-for-5 with a ninth-inning grand slam off Carlos Marmol and finished up with a season-tying high 5 RBI.#8220;He was struggling with his command a little bit, so I was going to try to be as patient as possible,#8221; Lee said of Marmol. #8220;I got the count 1-1 and just kind of got the pitch I was looking for.#8221;Lee has 8 RBI since joining the Pirates, all against the Cubs.#8220;I used to enjoy watching him,#8221; Cubs manager Mike Quade said. #8220;Not anymore.#8221;Marmol struggles:After holding opponents scoreless in his last 5 outings, closer Carlos Marmol hit a wall Saturday.A big wall, as in Derrek Lee, whose ninth-inning grand slam proved the Pirates' game-winner.#8220;He hit a good pitch. He took advantage of my mistake and that's what happens when you hang a pitch,#8221; Marmol said. #8220;You go out there and compete. What happens, happens. I tried to do my best and it didn't work out.#8221;#8220;Marms just had a bad day,#8221; manager Mike Quade said. #8220;We've got to figure that out with him.#8221;MVP chatter:Mike Quade, when asked for his pick for NL MVP, looked no further than the Cubs' division rival to the north.#8220;The left fielder (Ryan Braun) and the first baseman (Prince Fielder) in Milwaukee... it's pretty hard to look past them,#8221; Quade said.
