Wisconsin bear season set to open soon

MADISON, Wis. — Hunters are going on a bear hunt in Wisconsin, and they hope they catch a big one.

The state’s black bear season opens Wednesday and runs through Oct. 11. State Department of Natural Resources officials say they issued 9,005 permits. The statewide harvest quote is 5,235 bears, unchanged from last year.

Hunters will be required to submit a bear tooth and a 2-inch piece of rib during registration to help with a two-year bear population study designed to ensure the DNR is setting appropriate harvest quotas.
