Hungry families make too much for assistance

INDIANAPOLIS — A new study has found that about one in five children in central Indiana are at risk of hunger.

The Indianapolis Star reports the study of food insecurity found that 40 percent of families that can't put enough nutritious food on the table make too much money to be eligible for federal assistance such as food stamps.

The study released this week Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana and food bank network Feeding America found that 22 percent of children in central Indiana are at risk of hunger.

Robert Wilson of Gleaners says many families are just a paycheck or two from having to turn to a food pantry.

The report comes as food charities report heavy demand.
