Roof fire damages Indianapolis elementary school

INDIANAPOLIS — An elementary school in Indianapolis is closed for at least a day after a fire damaged its roof.

Firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof when they arrived Wednesday evening at the Indianapolis Public Schools building on the city’s north side. City fire Capt. Rita Burris says crews kept the fire contained to the roof, but that there is some interior water damage.

Several people who were inside IPS School 48 when the fire broke out escaped without any injuries.

Burris says the school was undergoing a roof repair project, although the fire’s cause wasn’t immediately determined.

Officials hope to reopen the school on Friday.
