Cougars fall to Clinton again

CLINTON, Iowa — For the third game in a row, the Kane County Cougars suffered a loss against the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field.

They won the opener of the four-game set Saturday but got outscored by a combined 19-2 Sunday and Monday and then fell 4-2 in the finale Tuesday night.

The two teams are tied for the Western Division’s top second-half playoff spot with 13 games remaining in the regular season. Beloit is 6 games behind the Cougars and LumberKings.

The Cougars took a quick lead Tuesday, their first advantage since Saturday. Brian Fletcher doubled home Geulin Beltre in the top of the first against Stephen Kohlscheen.

Starter Yordano Ventura retired the first six batters he saw but yielded the tying run in the third and gave up another in the fifth for a deficit the Cougars couldn’t overcome.

Ventura (3-5) gave up 2 runs on 4 hits — all doubles — and walked none in 5 innings.
