‘Retrial’ of Lincoln killer conspirator planned

Theatrical retrials of a woman who was among those executed for conspiring to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln are planned for this fall in Chicago and Springfield.

Mary Surratt was hanged on July 7, 1865 for conspiracy in the 16th president’s death. She ran a Washington, D.C. boarding house where John Wilkes Booth and others met to plan the killing.

The Chicago staging will be Sept. 23 at the Harold Washington Library Center. It will feature U.S. District Court Judge James Zagel presiding. Well-known attorneys Dan Webb and Jim Montgomery will act as prosecutors and Ed Genson and Karen Conti will be defense lawyers.

The audience will act as jury.

The Springfield rendition will be Oct. 3 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.
