Des Plaines waives permit fees for flood repairs

Des Plaines will waive permit fees for repairs and improvements needed as a result of July 23 flooding, city officials said this week.

The city council voted unanimously Monday approving a resolution to that effect. The city previously waived permit fees for repairs after severe flooding in August 2007 and September 2008.

Des Plaines received 6.86 inches of rain over three hours July 23, causing river and overland flooding of homes and basements throughout town. The city received 1,570 reports of property damage from residents.

“This extreme weather event caused a rainfall that surpassed previous historical records which resulted in severe property damage,” Acting City Manager Jason Slowinski said in a memo to the city council.

Residents seeking to make interior or exterior repairs should file a permit application for review with the city’s Department of Community & Economic Development, 1420 Miner St., between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For more information, call (847) 391-5380 or (847) 391-5370.
