Collision with squad car critically injures man in Lake Villa

A 68-year-old man was seriously injured in Lake Villa Monday afternoon when he pulled out of a side street and was struck by a Lake County sheriff’s office squad car.

The sheriff’s deputy was headed to a domestic battery in progress with the car’s lights and sirens activated, according to police.

The sheriff’s deputy was driving east on Grand Avenue at 1:19 p.m. when he smashed into the driver’s-side door of a Mercedes, which had pulled into his lane about one-eighth of a mile west of Route 83, said Lake County sheriff’s Sgt. Timothy Jonites.

The sheriff’s deputy and driver of the Mercedes were both taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center. The deputy was treated and released with minor injuries, but the driver of the second vehicle was in critical condition with a number of broken bones, according to police.
