Village to make permit process easier

LOMBARD, Illinois— The Village of Lombard Community Development Department is aiming to make the permit process easier and more efficient for everyone involved.

A building permit is a necessary component of the building process. A building permit indicates that the project is in compliance with current laws, codes and ordinances.

It is the Village's goal to have every construction project in the Village to be built correctly, safely and able to withstand the test of time. The Building Division of the Community Development Department provides homeowners and contractors with current building codes and construction requirements.

“An individual's home or business is their investment,” said William Heniff, Director of Lombard's Community Development Department. “If the construction project does not comply with the codes adopted by Lombard, the value of that investment could be reduced,” Heniff added. “Lombard's inspectors want our community projects to be successful and they'll assist homeowners and business owners with any potential problems that could cost them time and money,” he added.

One way in which the Village has introduced in its efforts in making the permit process more efficient for everyone is with the introduction of express permits. Express permits are building permits that require a simple application and are processed over the counter. Express permits will be issued on-the-spot, provided that the proper documentation is provided and the contractors have registered with the Village. Such permits are available for small residential and commercial projects, including:

• Fences

• Furnace/AC Replacement

• Driveways

• Garage Floor Replacements

• Residential & Commercial Roofs

• Basement Waterproofing

• Removal & Fill-In of Pools

• Electrical Service Upgrades

• Commercial Burglar Alarms

• Sewer & Water Repairs

• Window Replacement

• Water Heaters

• Banners

• Some Minor Electric, Plumbing and Framing Repairs

During the past few years, all Village departments have been looking at various ways to save money, reduce Village expenditures and combine resources yet still deliver the same quality services that Lombard residents expect to receive. The creation of “express permits” is one way of increasing efficiency of permit-processing and saving residents time with the introduction of this time-saving initiative.
