Gurnee DARE awards:

An awards ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, to recognize Gurnee’s Drug Awareness Resistance Education students who wrote winning essays during the spring session. It‘ll be at 11 a.m. in front of the village’s police headquarters, 100 N. O’Plaine Road. The ceremony is in conjunction with the police department open house as part of the Gurnee Days festival. The Gurnee Police Citizen Academy Alumni Association, in partnership with Woodland Elementary District 50 and Gurnee Elementary District 56, have awarded 42 students with brick pavers installed at “The Guardian” statue in front of the police station. Winners were chosen based on the quality of essay they wrote as part of the DARE program. Mayor Kristina Kovarik will present the awards.
