Rollover crash snarls Elgin traffic, sends driver to hospital

Chicago Street in downtown Elgin was shut down in both directions for nearly an hour during rush hour Tuesday after a three-vehicle crash sent one person to the hospital.

The crash at the intersection of East Chicago and Villa streets resulted in one of the vehicles rolling onto its roof about 4:45 p.m., said Elgin Fire Department Batallion Chief Tim Michaels.

Rosa Morales, 53, of Elgin was driving her Kia Soul SUV north on Villa when she attempted to turn left and struck another vehicle, causing her car to roll and strike a third vehicle, said Elgin spokeswoman Sue Olafson.

Morales was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin with nonlife-threatening injuries. She was cited for failing to yield, according to police.

Three other people suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene, Michaels said.

Emergency crews responded to the crash about 4:45 p.m. and shut down both directions of East Chicago Street and southbound traffic on Villa Street until about 5:30 p.m., Michaels said.
