Police: Man shot after injuring 2 cops with bat

ALORTON — Illinois State Police are investigating a disturbance in southwestern Illinois in which a man wielding a baseball bat attacked and injured two officers before being shot.

Police in the St. Clair County village of Alorton say the suspect in Tuesday's altercation was shot three times in the abdomen and was taken to a hospital. There's no word on his condition.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/qaWBvF ) reports that one of the officers is believed to have a broken wrist, while the other sustained a dislocated shoulder.

The names of the suspect and the injured officers haven't been released.

Police Chief Michael Baxton says the officers were responding to a report that someone was trying to break into an apartment.
