Chicago-area woman deported to Poland to return

CHICAGO — A woman who was deported from the United States to Poland four years ago is returning thanks to help from members of Congress and others who took up her cause.

Janina Wasilewski is to land at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Monday with her American-born son to be reunited with her husband.

Wasilewski was deported in 2007, about nine years after immigration authorities started to move to have her deported.

Wasilewski's legal battle to obtain a permanent resident's green card was the subject of the documentary "Tony & Janina's American Wedding." Congressmen Mike Quigley and Luis Gutierrez were among those who lobbied for her return.

Experts say such outcomes are exceedingly rare, and even successful legal battles can take years longer to win.
