Error shouldn’t have been published

On July 16, a letter was printed from reader who accused President Obama of lying about the military service of his father. She is mistaken. Barack Obama has referred many times to his grandfather as having served in World War II (his mother’s father), and there is substantial proof and evidence of that fact. No one ever claimed that either the president’s father or his stepfather ever served in the military.

For years, Obama was raised by his grandparents; recall that his elderly grandmother died in the autumn of 2008. If the Daily Herald had done any review of the letters printed in the paper they would have not printed this error and saved the writer the embarrassment of having her mistake broadcast throughout the readership. These kinds of letters containing obvious errors demonstrate the lack of attention by the Daily Herald.
