Charges filed in cop’s murder

First-degree murder charges have been filed against a man in the shooting death of an off-duty Chicago police officer.

Officer Michael Bailey was shot and killed July 18, 2010, as he was washing his car outside his South Side home. He’d just gotten off duty from the overnight shift on the detail assigned to Mayor Richard Daley’s home.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office announced Tuesday that 24-year-old Antwon Carter was charged with murder and attempted armed robbery.

Court records show Carter was on parole for aggravated battery to another police officer when, authorities say, he shot Bailey to death.

Carter, who was arrested two months after Bailey’s death, was being held in a state prison for violating parole when Chicago police began questioning him three weeks ago about Bailey’s murder.
