Have you ever caught a blooper? Are you an avid bug of America’s favorite pastime? Ever uttered the phrase “That’s the Ginger”?

No? Then this vintage baseball cheat sheet is for you. Learn how to impress your friends with your retro knowledge and huzzah-inducing jargon.

1858 rules

1. All pitching is done underhand, much like softball.

2. If a fly ball is hit into the outfield, an outfielder may get the batter out on a bounce.

3. No gloves are worn.

4. Foul balls are not considered strikes.

5. Sliding or overrunning first base is not allowed.

Lingo

Blooper: a weak fly ball

Bug: a fan, also known as a krank or rooter

“Drop a duck egg on ‘em:” hold them scoreless

Duff: an error, also known as a muff

Huzzah: hurrah

Lobster: an especially hated or villainous player

“Run, you ice wagon:” used to encourage a slow-moving player

“That’s the Ginger:” a job well done
