Glen Ellyn apartments damaged in blaze

Firefighters evacuated four families from a burning apartment building in Glen Ellyn early Saturday, but officials said no one was hurt.

The blaze on Greenwood Court, northwest of Roosevelt Road and Main Street, broke out about 6:40 a.m. Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Company spokesman Craig Eldridge said four families got out safely, but the four-flat building was left temporarily uninhabitable.

Eldridge said investigators were looking into whether the fire started in a first-floor kitchen, possibly at an electrical appliance. No official cause had been determined.

“The investigation is focused on the kitchen and appliances,” Eldridge said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly, officials said, but extensive smoke and water damage left the building uninhabitable.

Eldridge said residents received hotel vouchers and were being assisted by the American Red Cross. Three of the families likely will be able to return soon, he said.

“Fortunately, there were no injuries to any of the residents, police or firefighters,” he said.

Fire units from Bloomingdale, Lisle, Wheaton, Woodridge and York Center assisted.
