Police: Chicago man stole two cars in Elgin

What was a Chicago man from the city’s far South Side doing in Elgin?

Stealing a couple of cars, police said.

Police say that on Sunday, Rickey D. Woods, 27, broke into and stole an Oldsmobile 88 in the 100 block of Henry Street and a Buick Century in the 200 block of Douglas Avenue.

Charging documents said Woods, of the of the 10700 block of South Calhoun Avenue, caused less than $300 worth of damage to both the Buick’s and the Oldsmobile’s steering columns during the burglaries.

Police say Woods also lied to the police officer about his real name after an officer detained him, documents said.

He was charged with two felony counts of unlawful possession of a vehicle, two felony counts of burglary, two felony counts of criminal damage to property and one misdemeanor count of obstructing identification, authorities said.

His bail was set Monday morning at $150,000, which means he needs $15,000 to get out of jail while his case is pending.

Woods was unable to post bond and remained in the Kane County lockup Monday evening.

He is scheduled to appear in court July 26 at the Kane County Judicial Center. Unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle and burglary are Class 2 felonies and the most serious charge Woods faces. If found guilty of one of those charges, he could spend between three and seven years in prison or receive up to four years probation.
