Gas line ruptured in Arlington Heights

A contractor hit and ruptured a 4-inch gas line while working in a parkway in Arlington Heights Friday afternoon, officials said.

The gas leak occurred near the corner of Algonquin and New Wilke roads after 1:30 p.m., and crews from Nicor Gas were on scene within an hour, according to Nicor spokeswoman Annette Martinez.

The gas line had to be shut down at 5 p.m. in order to make repairs, but no customers — either business or residential — were effected, Martinez said.

However, Algonquin Road and nearby streets were closed much of Friday afternoon, tying up traffic until streets were reopened around 6 p.m. That resulted in some nearby stores shutting down early, according to Arlington Heights police and fire officials.

Nicor crews were still on scene late Friday repairing the line, Martinez said.
