Family Garden Club enjoys “Digging in the Dirt”

Children are learning the ins and outs of planting their own herbs and vegetables as part of the Waukegan Public Library’s “Digging in the Dirt” Family Gardening Club.

The club meets weekly throughout the summer at the library’s outdoor garden and other garden cooperatives in Waukegan and North Chicago.

“Our garden is completely organic, so we’re teaching kids about the role of insects and important facts about nutrition,” said Sandy Sherwood, children’s librarian. “After the meetings, families get to take home any produce they’ve grown.”

Crops include lettuce, carrots, radishes, collard greens and herbs.

The club is free and recommended for families with children ages 4-7. To register, visit waukeganpl.org.
