New map improves 10th District

Limiting my observations to my own U.S. 10th Congressional District, the newly enacted-into-law redistricted boundaries represent a marked improvement over what we had before.

Ideally, one should strive to have coherence and a commonality of interests reflected in the makeup of a congressional district, to the extent feasible. This new incarnation of the 10th takes a major step in the direction of making the district more Lake County-centric. Zion, Benton, Avon and Grant Townships have been added, and inroads have been made into Lake Villa and Fremont Townships.

Logically shed were the Cook County townships of New Trier, Palatine and most of Wheeling.

At least insofar as the 10th is concerned, the expected GOP lawsuit has absolutely no substantive grounds. This district now makes more sense both demographically and geographically.

(For an excellent overview, with clearly decipherable maps, see page 11 of the June 25 edition of the Daily Herald for Lake County.)
