Public works crews working to clear streets after recent storm

Monday, July 11 Storm Damage Not Enough to Warrant Special Brush Collection

On Monday, July 11, a brief storm caused damage throughout the city. The Department of Public Works responded by clearing streets and hazardous branches for the next several days. Approximately 25 parkway trees were destroyed and will be removed. The Department of Public Works had approximately 1,000 calls during the three days after the storm and received more than 400 service requests for parkway tree damage, but most of the damage reported was relatively minor. Citywide, the extent of damage caused by this storm does not warrant a special brush collection.

Residents that suffered private storm damage should dispose of their brush through the weekly yard waste collection program. To properly dispose of brush, place small branches, twigs and leaves in 32-gallon paper yard waste bags. Alternatively, branches less than three inches in diameter may be tied in bundles that measure up to four feet long and two feet wide. Secure each bundle with biodegradable twine. Bags and bundles have a 60-pound weight limit. A yard waste sticker is required on each bag or bundle placed at the curb for collection on garbage day. Stickers cost $2.10 each and may be purchased at Naperville hardware and grocery stores or in the Finance Department of the Naperville Municipal Center located at 400 S. Eagle St.

By way of comparison, a special collection was conducted after last summer's storms that resulted in the removal of 88 parkway trees. In addition, more than 500 parkway trees suffered damage during the 2010 storm. The Department of Public Works received more than 2,500 service request calls for assistance with private storm damage during this storm. The cost of the special collection in 2010 was $142,000.

The next citywide curbside brush collection is scheduled for May of 2012.
