City Experiences Minimal Storm Damage, All Power Restored Within Two Hours to Utility Customers

Naperville Experiences Minimal Damage from Severe Thunderstorm on Monday, July 11

The City of Naperville experienced minimal storm damage from the severe weather that moved through the area the morning of Monday, July 11. No major damage was reported from the thunderstorms, which brought reports of 65 mile per hour winds to the City.

The Department of Public Works had approximately 30 service requests for damage to trees within the initial hours after the storm. There are currently no plans to host any special brush collection. Due to the storm, almost 700 City utility customers out of approximately 58,000 experienced power outages, and all power was restored to these customers by the Department of Public Utilities-Electric within two hours of the storm.

Over a 16 hour period during and after the storm, Naperville dispatch fielded 1,970 calls and the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) handled 927 calls, including some from ComEd electric customers in unincorporated areas with Naperville mailing addresses. Naperville's Communications personnel have been offering tips to help these customers through their power outages.

“The City's electric utility has operated under a continuous improvement model for the past two decades thanks to the forward-thinking leadership of the Naperville City Council,” Community Relations Manager Nadja Lalvani said. “Since 95 percent of our transmission lines are buried underground it greatly minimizes power outages during severe weather events. The City is committed to keeping the lights on for our residents in even the most challenging weather scenarios.”

The City also encourages all residents to continually review their plans for when severe weather strikes. Residents should review their family emergency plan and check the contents of their family disaster supply kit. During and immediately prior to severe weather incidents, residents should tune in to their preferred local media outlet, NOAA Weather Radio and the National Weather Service website at www.crh.noaa.gov/lot/ for the latest weather updates.

The city has produced an Emergency Preparedness Guide to assist residents in creating a plan. A copy of this document is available on the city's website at www.naperville.il.us/emergencyprepguide.aspx. More information on how to prepare for severe weather is available at www.naperville.il.us/severestormweek.aspx and www.weather.gov/os/severeweather/index.shtml.
