Des Plaines mayor proud of city’s storm response

As mayor of the City of Des Plaines, I want to extend a sincere “thank you” to Des Plaines residents, our fire and police department, members of Fire Corps, Citizens on Patrol, the Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency, the Public Works Department and the many city employees and volunteers who worked diligently during the storm of June 21 and the days that followed.

The city takes great pride in securing the health, safety and welfare of our residents at all times, but, particularly, during events such as our recent storm which brought dangerous and damaging winds.

Our personnel worked around the clock making every provision necessary to assure that the needs of our residents would be met. As I toured the city in my car or on my bike during the hours and days that followed the storm, I was greeted by residents who, despite hardships, downed tree limbs and power outages, were outside assisting with cleanup, helping neighbors, giving a “thumbs-up.”

It was a good feeling to know that, even with all the adversity, Des Plaines was upbeat and thriving. Neighbors were working together — kids were outside helping and enjoying an unexpected day off from school.

I would also like to extend my thanks and gratitude to ComEd who, faced with the challenges of technology and the magnitude of the storm, did the utmost to service our residents and make our city operational. Despite some challenges, we truly were fortunate in that power was restored as quickly as the crews were capable.

Special thanks goes out to the media who, without their assistance, we would have no voice during emergency situations such as our recent storm. Modern technology now allows the media to convey messages instantly and we are so very grateful. We all know that communication is paramount for good government, particularly when our well-being and safety are threatened.

Remember, we are here for you. While local government cannot control nature, as your mayor, I have a responsibility to this great city and will continue to work for each and every one of you. Thank you.
